The long awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 box office monster, Avatar, finally has a release window. In a recent interview with Montreal Gazzette, Cameron spoke on the release plans for the upcoming sequels. Cameron is aiming to release Avatar 2 for Christmas ’17 with the sequels following in 2018 and 2019.
At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a met-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.
Cameron also spoke with Montreal Gazzette about the development stages of the sequel and writing portion. James describes the designs as “more or less finished” and tells the magazine that the movie will explore new worlds of Pandora.
We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. (We’ve finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.
Still to this day, Avatar is the highest selling movie in box office history. You have two years to see the cinematic beauty if you haven’t already.
