What once appeared to be an almost-finished race for the Houston Rockets’ open head coaching position seems to be taking a turn. Despite reports that Philadelphia 76ers associate head coach Mike D’Antoni was the favorite to win the job, Houston has continued to interview others and now there may be a new frontrunner in the race in James Borrego.
Borrego, a Spurs assistant and former interim head coach of the Orlando Magic, was interviewed by the team just recently. Now, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, he is getting a meeting with Rockets owner Les Alexander.

That Borrego will be meeting with Rockets ownership may point to some movement from Houston in hiring the assistant to take over for the recently departed J.B. Bickerstaff.
Of course, nothing is set in stone as made evident by the apparent change of heart since the D’Antoni rumors started. The Rockets seem to still be interested in Magic assistant Adrian Griffin as well.
But for now, it appears as if the team is headed towards hiring James Borrego to be their next head coach.
