After everything that has been going on with race relations, one would think to tread lightly on the subject. However, we have conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh spewing more racist rhetoric in the name of James Bond a.k.a. Agent 007. It isn’t a secret that extremist to the far right have an issue with people of color rising through the ranks of their establishment. But, this is a damn movie. And it’s a movie that was showcased by white males with British and Scottish backgrounds.
Now, this is where Limbaugh fucked up, according to his quote, “He was white and Scottish, period. That is who James Bond is,” Limbaugh said, adding: “I know it’s racist to probably even point this out.”
“But the franchise needs to get with it, right?” he continued. “The franchise needs to get hip. The franchise needs to get with the 21st Century. That’s right. We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond is white. Bond was never black.”
Let that settle in. Considering that Roger Moore was English, how in God’s name does Limbaugh come to the oblivious conclusion that all James Bond characters are solely Scottish?
He clearly doesn’t know that Bond is a fictitious name given by the agency to cover his identity. But that defies reasonable logic, right? James Bond can be anybody, and that’s the point. Anyone with a dose of intelligence knows you can’t run a spy agency giving out real names. This is common logic.
So to think that British Secret Service would consistently appoint familiar faces to execute missions across the globe would be reasonable, correct? No, it would be asinine and a straight-up foolish thought.
This all goes to display the blatant racism that world is dealing with, mostly in the U.S. How can folks with relative smarts agree with such stupidity? It’s because some of you can’t fathom the idea that people of another race can portray fictional characters in any medium.
Additionally, look at the movie Annie. We are aware of the origins of the story and that she is a white, red-haired female. Nonetheless, the film was recreated with a more diverse cast — Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie and Jamie Foxx as William Stacks a.k.a. Oliver Warbucks.
Stop selling yourselves short and realize life is bigger than regressive words chanted by an ignorant blowhard like Rush Limbaugh. You want progression, keep an open mind.
Stay Woke.
