Jameer Nelsons NBA career is coming to an end. The 33 year old Point Guard hasn’t had a healthy season since 2011 or 2012, and the last time he’s been effective was when Dwight Howard was still on the Orlando Magic. Nelson recently spent his previous season as a Denver Nugget, and now according to sources, he will opt out of his contract and test free agency.
According to Real GM:
“Nelson has not yet informed Nuggets officials of his final decision, but both sides have held discussions recently under the premise that the six-foot guard will enter the free-agent market and potentially continue negotiations with the team.”
Nelson had one year and $2.85 million left on his deal. The Nuggets hoped Nelson would stick around and provide some veteran leadership to a locker room desperately in need of it, but seeing as how Nelson is entering the twilight of his career, it makes sense for him to go to a team that’s contending, not rebuilding.
Nelson must definitely believe in his ability to help a team if he thinks teams will think about signing him. Despite my opinion, there are some teams that may be interested in Nelsons abilities. Maybe the Mavericks, Lakers, Knicks, or any team that wouldn’t mind having a veteran to teach the young point guards or someone willing to take a risk, so the Knicks are always in the running for him.
