In last year’s draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves took Karl-Anthony Towns with the 1st overall pick, giving them a connection to the Kentucky program. This year, they have the 5th overall pick. Could they use that pick to take another Kentucky standout, Jamal Murray?
According to Kent Youngblood of the StarTribune, Kentucky head coach John Calipari said Jamal would like to play for the Wolves:
“Who is Mr. Towns?’ Calipari joked. “That KAT kid? OK, well, here’s what I would say. [Wolves president of basketball operations and coach Tom Thibodeau] and I are great friends. He helped my career, helped me basketball-wise and every other way. I’m a big fan of Thibs. Jamal? I’m saying this to you and no one else. He loves Minnesota. As a matter of fact, that’s where he’d like to go.’’
Jamal Murray will likely be a top pick in this years draft, so will the Timberwolves be able to pick him? According to Def Pen’s most recent mock draft, Murray should be available at the 5th pick. The only problem would be if the Boston Celtics take him. Boston has shown interest in him recently, but if they don’t take him, look for the Timberwolves to snag him with the 5th pick and add to their extremely talented core.
