Former eighth overall pick Jake Locker is retiring after only four season in the NFL. NFL media insider Ian Rapaport was able to obtain this statement from Locker about his retirment,
“I am retiring from football after much reflection and discussion with my family. I will always be grateful for having had the opportunity to realize my childhood dream of playing in the NFL and for the lifelong relationships I developed because of that experience.”
“Football has always played a pivotal role in my life and I love the game, but I no longer have the burning desire necessary to play the game for a living; to continue to do so would be unfair to the next organization with whom I would eventually sign. I realize this decision is surprising to many, but I know in my heart that it is the right decision and I look forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing other interests.”
Locker’s retirement from the league is unexpected, however, it’s not inconceivable. Although Locker showed signs of promise during his short career he was never able to take that next step. He also received serious injuries in three of his four years in the league.
Locker finishes his career with a passer rating of 79.0, 4,967 yards, 27 passing touchdowns to 22 interceptions, 644 rushing yards, and 5 rushing touchdowns. With the average NFL career lasting about four and a half years Locker is seemingly right on time to retire.
