Netflix has announced an anime series debuting this month starring Jaden Smith.
“Neo Yokio” will star Jaden Smith as the pink-haired protagonist, Kaz Kaan. The show was created, written and executive produced by Ezra Koenig of the band Vampire Weekend.
The show’s name is a homage to the 1988 anime film “Akira,” set in a city called Neo Toyko.
In “Neo Yokio,” Smith plays Kaan, who comes from a family of demon slayers called “magistocrats.” Alongside Smith will be Desus Nice and The Kid Mero cast as his friends Gottlieb and Lexy, Susan Sarandon as his Aunt Agatha, and Jude Law and his robot/butler Charles.
Willow Smith, Amandla Stenberg and more will be featured as characters in the six episode series.
Koenig and Smith had been planning this show for a few years now. In 2015, Koenig posted on Twitter a picture of him and Smith together, with the tweet reading “things are bubbling in the sea beneath 14th street.” Two years later, the world will see what they’ve been working on. The series will debut September 22.
