Denver Nuggets point guard Isaiah Thomas had nobody backing up a Brinks truck to him this offseason. The former Boston Celtics star and MVP-candidate spent parts of last season with the Cavaliers and Lakers before hitting the free agent market this summer. It was quite a fall from the mountain top for Thomas, who was and perhaps is still a revered player in Celtics fandom. And he almost donned his green jersey once again.
In an interview with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi, Isaiah Thomas says he spoke with Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge about a possible reunion in Boston. “If the opportunity is there, I would just like to let you know that I’d love to come back,” Thomas says he told Ainge. The two spoke for around 15 to 20 minutes.
The 29-year-old left Boston with a sour taste, but Thomas also says he does not hold anything against the organization. “S—, I’d have gone back,” Thomas says. “I don’t hold grudges.”
In the end, a deal between Thomas and the Celtics did not come to fruition. However, Ainge had said he was interested in the possibility of brining Thomas back. The hitch was Boston, at the time, was working through Marcus Smart and his contract situation. Wojnarowksi adds that Ainge showed a willingness to continue the conversation with Thomas after completing Smart’s contract, but he signed with Denver.
Perhaps a return to Boston is in the future for Isaiah Thomas, as it appears the two sides have made up with no bad blood. For at least this upcoming year, however, Thomas will be helping the Nuggets try to get back to the playoffs.
