Isaiah Thomas’ postseason campaign did not start under the calmest circumstances. Ahead of the Boston Celtics’ first game in the playoffs, the point guard learned that his sister had tragically passed away in a car accident.
What has followed has been four emotional games for Thomas who has opted to continue playing for his team despite mourning a tragic loss. Thomas’ performance has gradually been better as the Celtics have climbed out of a surprising 2-0 deficit against the Chicago Bulls.
After game four, Thomas opened up about the process of playing basketball while going through personal tragedy.
Following transcribed by Colin Ward-Henneger of CBS Sports:
“Mentally and emotionally, I’m not here, so I just feed off what the guys give me,” Thomas said. “They give me a lot of confidence. I can’t do it without those guys. They believe in me. Being here is what makes me, I guess, sane. It makes me feel somewhat normal through this tough time.”
The Celtics, from the top of the organization to Brad Stevens to every player, have all seemingly been very supportive of Thomas in a clearly difficult time. While basketball is the least important part of this story, it’s good to see that camaraderie bring some comfort to Isaiah.
