Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas is nearing his return to the NBA court, but it appears there will be some caveats for the time being. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin says Thomas will be on a minutes restriction and unable to play in back to back games, according to Tyronn Lue.
The Cavaliers have ruled out Thomas until January 2nd against Portland, making that the earliest possible return date. That means he would be unavailable for the January 3rd heavyweight bout against the Boston Celtics. McMenamin mentions that Thomas says he would have a hard time not playing a full allotment of minutes against the team that traded him this past summer.
The road to recovery for Thomas has been chronicled for many weeks now. He has come out to say that the Celtics trading him away really hurt, especially considering he was physically hurt at the time. He recently said had he known the extent of his injury, he would have sat out the playoffs last season.
The Cavaliers are currently down two point guards due to injury. Derrick Rose is mysteriously rehabbing an ankle injury and has no timetable for return. Jose Calderon is currently serving as the team’s starting point guard.
