WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis will not be sharing the ring with Rolando “Rolly” Romero on December 5. Instead, Davis will square off against lightweight contender Isaac Cruz of Mexico City, Mexico.
Romero has been pulled from the fight because he was recently accused of sexual assault by several different women. As a result, he has reportedly become the center of a police investigation in Nevada. The boxing prospect issued a statement to Mike Coppinger of ESPN earlier today.
“Although the allegations against me are totally false and I will prove that through the legal process, I agree that it is in the best interest of everyone involved that I not participate in the upcoming pay-per-view event. After clearing my name I will return to the ring as soon as possible,” the statement reads.
As Romero sorts out his legal standing, the world of boxing will hone in on Davis-Cruz. Davis enters the fight after taking the WBA Super Lightweight Championship from Mario Barrios in June. His opponent, Cruz, enters the ring with a record of 22-1 and a recent win against Francisco Vargas in June.
With an undefeated record and heavy hands, Davis will likely be a large betting favorite. However, Cruz’s aggression, determination and occasionally questionable tactics will pose challenges for Davis.
