Well, it’s finally here; Avengers: Endgame hit theaters today (or more specifically last night). And if early reviews are to be believed, it’s a grand slam, triple-double, hole in one, and 100-yard kickoff return all wrapped up in one. This week in preparation for Endgame, Def Pen has been breaking down why every one of the original Avengers is going to keep fighting Thanos, even though he already beat them once. Today’s obviously the last day of that and who better to end with than the billionaire, (ex-) playboy, a philanthropist who started it all, Tony Stark.
Let’s take it back for a minute. Back to 2008, when Tony Stark and the MCU first graced our screens in Iron Man. Stark was introduced to us as a womanizing rich guy with a drinking problem who put no thought towards the human cost of his weapons. Then everything changed in that cave with Yinsen. He came face to face with the death and destruction caused by his hands from then on he resolved to protect the world, and most importantly the ones he loved.
When he nearly gave his life for New York, his world REALLY expanded and the threat became so much bigger. After that, Tony always seemed like he was trying to wall himself in to protect as many people as he could. He created Ultron, which failed miserably, nearly causing the end of the world. He helped draft the Sokovia Accords, which splintered the Avengers, making them vulnerable to a Thanos-level attack. On top of all that, he suddenly had a friendly-neighborhood Spider-Man running around to worry about.
Tony’s no stranger to failure. Sure, he’s rich and successful but even over the course of these movies, we’ve seen him fail. Often more than he’s succeeded. But, he’s never quite failed on the level he did in Infinity War. Everything he’s fought so hard to protect is gone, literally dust in the wind. And I have a feeling he’s not going to take that lying down.
From the moment he stepped out of that cave as Iron Man, Tony’s been on a collision course with Thanos. Everything he’s done led to their face off of in Infinity War but, that was only round one. I know Tony claims he won’t be able to pull off “one last miracle” in the trailers but come on, this is Tony Stark we’re talking about. He brought us into the MCU so it’s only fair to assume he’ll be the one to figure out how to save it. At the very least we know he’ll avenge it.
Avengers: Endgame hits theaters worldwide on April 26th.
