Today, another page will turn in the ongoing legal battle involving Daystar “Tory Lanez” Peterson. Last December, the Canadian artist was tried and convicted of the following charges in connection to the shooting of Megan “Meg Thee Stallion” Pete: carrying an unregistered firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Eight months later, Peterson has returned to the court to receive a sentence from Judge David V. Herriford.
Members of Peterson’s legal team have asked Judge Herriford to hand the singer a sentence that consists of probation. To argue their case, Peterson’s legal representatives presented statements from the jail chaplain, who says the singer “stands out” because he has led “a daily prayer in the protective custody unit that has lessened the tensions between inmates.” Further reporting by way of Meghann Cuniff says a jailer wrote a letter in which Lanez is “remorseful” and has “talked in detail about the event and what he could have done to prevent it.” From there, Tory Lanez’s defense team presented a letter from Iggy Azalea in which the Australian artist asks Judge Herriford to give him a sentence that is “transformational, not life destroying.”
Conversely, the prosecution has recommended Judge Herriford hand down a sentence of 13 years. The Office of Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has found that “circumstances of aggravation” are present in this case and the singer presented a level of “callousness” that calls for a harsh sentence.
The court is currently in recess and will resume shortly.
