Netflix has announced a new comedy series from Idris Elba that will release later this year. Turn Up Charlie will hit Netflix on March 15th, the streaming service also released first-look images of the show.
Elba created the series with Gary Reich, it follows Elba as a middling DJ who is given one last chance to be successful as a ‘manny’ for the daughter of his famous friend. Elba will star alongside Piper Perabo and JJ Feild. Angela Griffin, Guz Khan, Jocelyn Jee Esein, Jade Anouka, Cameron King and Dustin Demri-Burns will also appear in the series.
Turn Up Charlie is being co-produced by Green Door Pictures and Brown Eyed Boy Productions, owned by Elba and Reich, respectively. The two men will serve as executive producers alongside Tristram Shapeero, who will also direct with Matt Lipsey. Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito are serving as co-executive producers.
This marks Elba’s second foray into the comedic world following last year’s In the Long Run. That series saw Elba portray an immigrant from Sierra Leone living in 19Londonndon with his family. It was loosely based on Elba’s own life.
Elba can be seen currently in the fifth season of Luther on BBC. He made his directorial debut last January with Yardie. The actor will appear next on the big screen in Hobbs & Shaw opposite Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Elba is currently filming Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Cats.
