The Houston Rockets have had a great offseason, you may find GM Daryl Morey annoying but you can’t knock his track record in recent offseasons. It’s just a shame the team itself can’t get it done in the Playoffs.
Now that most teams are just filling the back of their rosters, you can’t look at the Rockets and not say ‘title contender’. They have to get it done now, they have plugged up their point guard weakness with Ty Lawson, Western Conference Finals is a minimum for this team. But obviously the trade for Lawson left the Rockets a bit thin on the bench, which is why they’ve signed team favourite Chuck Hayes to a 1-Year deal.
Hayes, 32, played in 29 games for the Toronto Raptors last season, averaging 8.8 minutes per game. Hayes averaged just 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
Hayes is familiar with the Rockets, having spent the first six seasons of his NBA career in Houston.
Now this is just to fill the bench of course, but it’s always good to have somebody that is familiar with the franchise, knows the people inside the team and doesn’t need time to ‘settle in’. Hayes can just walk in, ask everyone ‘how you’ve been?’ and jump into team with ease. Simple and understandable hire.
