The Rockets were set to trade Thornton to the Detroit Pistons until Donatas Motiejunas failed his physical and the deal was voided.
Thornton, who enjoyed a great start to the season, has seen his role on the team diminish recently; he’s played under 30 minutes in each of his last 6 games. Once he clears waivers, Thornton will be available to be signed, and he likely will be. He’s a talented scorer, and does well in a spark off the bench type of role.
The 28-year-old guard has averaged 10 points and 2.4 rebounds in 47 appearances for the Rockets this season, while shooting .400/.338/.879.
Thornton has been in the NBA for seven years, after being drafted 43rd overall by the Miami Heat, though his draft rights were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans(then Hornets). Thornton played in New Orleans for around a season and a half before being traded to the Sacramento Kings in the 2010-11 season. He played in Sacramento until he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in the 2013-14 season. Since then, he’s bounced around between the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets. Where will he wind up next?
