Democrats of the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package by a vote of 2014 to 207. The bill would provide another round of stimulus checks, prohibit evictions for one year and restore $600 weekly unemployment.
Republicans largely opposed the bill because of its cost. GOP lawmakers had previously supported a bill that was $600 billion less than the $2.2 trillion package
“I’d like to see another rescue package. We’ve been trying for months to get there. I wish them well,” Sen. Mitch McConnell said.
In addition to Republican opposition, seventeen Democrats also voted against the bill because they felt it was too partisan and had little chance of becoming law once it reached the majority-Republican Senate
“This move toward compromise has demonstrably renewed momentum for a deal, and we are closer than we have been in months, but the only thing that will deliver the help my constituents need is a bill that will actually become law,” Rep. Cindy Axne said.
With U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearing set for next week, it is unlikely the U.S. Senate will vote the bill into law before November’s election.
