Hot 97’s Summer Jam ’13: The Good, The Strange and The Unknown

  • June 3, 2013
  • Jasmina Cuevas

Summer JamHot 97 has been putting together the Summer Jam show for many years and every time it is filled with excited fans, great performances and stage antics that should have never seen daylight. And Summer Jam 2013 fully carried on that torch. Being that this year marked the 20th anniversary of Summer Jam, it was only right that it took off with a bang, which it did, but by the end of the night that bang turned more into an explosion! Check out the good, the strange and the unknown of Summer Jam XX after the jump and make sure to catch the VEVO replay at 2PM EST here.

-The Good-

Ever since we can remember, Chris Brown has always put on a good performance and he definitely held it down on the Summer Jam stage. With performances of his hit singles, “Beautiful People,” “She Ain’t You,” “Strip,” and “Fine China,” by the time he was done, people were screaming for more! Not to mention he brought out Sean Kingston, someone we haven’t seen in quite some time.

Kendrick Lamar should most definitely be named artist of the year! The rapper joined A$AP Rocky during his set for a performance of “Fuckin’ Problems,” and ended up taking over the stage for his own set. The good kid, m.A.A.d city rapper had the crowd standing on their seats in the pouring rain while he rhymed his hit singles, “Backseat Freestyle,” “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” “m.A.A.d city,” “Poetic Justice,” and “Money Trees.” Along with an amazing performance, Kendrick brought out his TDE crew and had a party of his own on stage while they all performed. The crowd and the performers were just vibing! Check out his performance here.

Kendrick Lamar

R&B crooner, Miguel, came out on a mission to romance his lady fans but in all reality he sounded like he was the one that got dropped kick in the neck. Unfortunately, his performance wasn’t up to par as it usually it is but he made up for it by brining out the legendary, Mariah Carey, for a live performance of their single, “Beautiful.”

-The Strange-

2 Chainz’ performance had the most energy during the entire show and he had everyone twerking it. He even brought out Nicki Minaj for a performance of his single, “I Love Dem Strippers,” and “Beez in the Trap.” All that was well and good but at the end of the performance, Nicki was joined by Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg and was embraced with a hug. Now some wouldn’t think this is strange but remember last year’s Summer Jam turned into a disaster when Rosenberg dissed Nicki and she refused to show up. That turned into a year long beef up until a week ago when Rosenberg apologized on the air. An apology is cool but the whole hugging on stage thing is kind of overboard. We get it, y’all made it.

A$AP Rocky is a very fashionable dude and often late but he was beyond fashionably late to his own performance! The Hot 97 morning show came on stage to introduce Pretty Flacko and ended up having to introduce him more than once because he was no where to be found. When he finally made it to the stage, he stated some lame excuse about not being able to make it to the stage when he wanted to. Huh?

French Montana was the last one to hit the stage but that sure didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to put on one hell of a show! The Coke Boy went hard during his performance with guest appearances, Ace Hood, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. He performed his hit singles, “Ochocinco,” and “Pop That,” and just as everyone was getting ready to take their energy to the next level, his set was cut short. Why you ask? Well, apparently Metlife stadium takes lightening very serious and asked everyone to evacuate. Funny thing is, they weren’t so worried about everyone’s safety when it was down pouring. Things that make you go hmmmm. Check out his performance here.

-The Unknown-

Fabolous’ repped for BK on that Summer Jam stage and he brought out Lil’ Kim to rep with him! Fans were loving his performance but when it was time to bring out his second guest, everyone on the stage looked confused, including Fab. Apparently, his second guest didn’t get the memo that they were supposed to be there by a certain time. People are still uncertain whom he was supposed to bring out but some are saying it was Foxy Brown. Another mystery for the unknown files.

Do you all remember when Lil’ Mama bum rushed Jay-Z’s performance? Well, Papoose did the same thing but he bum rushed the entire show! After Kendrick’s set, the DJ started playing Papoose’s “Get At Me,” but instead of hearing the recorded version, fans got a live performance! Papoose jumped on stage and got his few minutes of fame but was never signed to the bill. Even Hot 97’s staff was unaware of what was taking place but made sure not to make a scene. That is until afterwards when everyone caught wind of what happened. Let’s just say, Twitter was on fire last night! Check out his performance here.
