In what was is a surprising news for the world, Henry Cavill has exited the DC extended universe as Superman. Cavill has played in 2 movies as the man of steel and has officially withdrawn from the role after scheduling conflicts with Warner Brothers and DC.
According to Hollywood Reporter:
Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill, who most recently co-starred in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill’s WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.
That’s because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill’s age from the storyline’s equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.
Cavill was set to have a cameo in the upcoming Zachary Levi portrayal of ‘Shazam’ in 2019 but the scheduling conflicts have made it difficult to make that work. With that being said, this now gives room for Ben Affleck to depart from the DC universe after being in two movies as the Caped Crusader, Batman. With the DC universe set to shift their focus on ‘Supergirl’ instead of Superman and ‘Batgirl’ instead of Batman, you can tell that there is a whole shift in ideology over at Warner Brothers.
There won’t be a Superman movie anytime soon. There is a Batman trilogy in the works with Planet of The Apes director Christopher Reeves but he’s supposedly been targeting a younger Batman so Affleck wouldn’t fit the bill. These two departures will be a tough pill to swallow for fans of the DC universe because with Aquaman and Shazam coming out, people really started to believe the universe was shaping up. Now, there is a lot of things up in the air and the DC Universe seems to be in shambles. Let’s hope their upcoming movies Aquaman and Shazam shape the universe to keep going in a direction without two of their biggest superheroes.
