Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has stated that he will retire after fighting title challenger Dilian Whyte on Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Fury claims that he has nothing left to prove and would like step away from the sport while on top of the division.
“I’ve got nothing to prove to anybody, I’m just there to have fun, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy the night. It’s the final farewell. It’s been a long old ride, it’s quite emotional to be honest. All this, the ride of, like, starting as a little kid and wanting to be heavyweight champion, and then to finally be hanging up the gloves,” Fury stated, according to Bad Left Hook.
“And I know nobody believes me because they all think I’m after money or whatever else — there’s only a certain amount of people who know that money don’t mean nothing to me.”
Previously, many believed that Fury would look to fight the winner of this summer’s heavyweight battle between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua. However, he says that a potential unification bout no longer interests me.
“He ain’t a virgin any more, he’s been beat. There’s no debate. It’s not an exciting fight. It’s only for money anyway. If I fought Joshua now I wouldn’t be gaining anything because people don’t think he can beat me anyway,” he said on Tuesday, according to IFL TV.
Regardless of his future in the sport, Fury must get by Dilian Whyte on Saturday at Wembley Stadium in the U.K. Nearly 100,000 fans are expected to turn out as ESPN airs the festivities in the U.S. via pay-per-view.
