HBO is going big on Game of Thrones while it can. They have seen 7 fruitful seasons of one of the most iconic shows in the 21st century and good on them to continue to find ways to show different perspectives to die-hard fans. A Game of Thrones prequel is in the works with a new cast set in the era of the mad king and now we will be getting a documentary surrounding the series just a week after the series finale.
The documentary will cover the production and creation of the final season in its entirety. With Season 8 set to be some of the most expensive television story-telling production we’ve ever seen, you can imagine they’ve gone all out. The final season will be 7 episodes with each episode supposedly the length of a feature film. It makes sense that a documentary is released regarding its creation, especially if it turns out a masterpiece.
Per THR:
HBO has announced a new feature-length documentary called Game of Thrones: The Last Watch, which is set to air May 26, one week following the series finale. Directed by filmmaker Jeanie Finlay and running at two hours, Last Watch will chronicle the making of the final Game of Thrones season, drawing on Finlay’s experiences while embedded on the set for a year. The doc “delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland,” according to HBO.
Now it’s only on the final season but Game of Thrones already has a similar documentary talking about the entirety of the season in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch. Season 8, Episode 1 airs April 14th, 2019.
