HBO gave fans their first look at what to expect of the upcoming Watchmen series from Damon Lindelof. The show received an official Instagram account and posted the following photo:
Granted, the photo doesn’t reveal much except for the art style. However, the police iconography and the Instagram bio “Nothing ever ends…” hint at an updated take on the property.
Lindelof stated as much back in May with his own Instagram post regarding the series. Lindelof stated that the show will be less of a full-blown adaptation and more a “remix” of the graphic novel. This lines up with the series description from HBO’s website: “Damon Lindelof creates a modern-day reimagining of Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel about masked vigilantes.”
It seems like the show will take the themes and tone from the source material and retool them for a modern audience. This could really set the series apart from the novel and provide some interesting social commentary in a way that most popular superhero projects avoid.
Lindelof has previously worked with HBO on The Leftovers and worked on J.J. Abrams’ Lost.
Watchmen is currently in production and will release sometime in 2019, likely later in the year.
