HBO has decided to cut Avenue 5 after two seasons.
The Armando Iannucci comedy series debuted in January 2020 just before the COVID-19 pandemic fully impacted life in the U.S. As a result, production of the show’s second season did not begin until late 2021. Ultimately, the show’s second and final season aired in October 2022.
“Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey,” a spokesperson for HBO said.
“While we will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Avenue 5,’ we look forward to many more adventures together.”
Starring Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front and Hugh Laurie, the series took a comedic look at something that could be a reality in the near future — space tourism.
“While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd, Captain Ryan Clark finds himself in over his head when the ship is thrown disastrously off-course – turning what was meant to be an eight-week cruise into an eight-year journey,” the show’s description reads.
Despite ending Avenue 5, Ianucci will continue working with the premium network. Next up, he is set to develop a show called The Franchise, a comedy that looks at the film business through the lens of a Hollywood superhero movie.
