Legendary guard “Pistol” Pete Maravich will have his number 44 jersey retired by the Atlanta Hawks, reports Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
The Hawks will retire the uniform number of Pete Maravich, according to a person familiar with the situation.
A date and details of when the No. 44 will be raised to the rafters of Philips Arena have not been finalized.
The Hawks will join the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans as teams that have retired Maravich’s number.
Maravich, who died of a heart attack at the age of 40 while playing pick-up basketball, will be the fifth player to have his number retired by the Hawks, joining Bob Pettit, Lou Hudson, Dominique Wilkins, and Dikembe Mutombo.
For his career, Maravich averaged 24.2 points and 5.4 assists on 44.1% shooting.
Maravich, who averaged 44.2 points per game over the course of his three-year collegiate career at Louisiana State University, holds the record for most career NCAA Division 1 points scored.
In unrelated Hawks news, the team is reportedly shopping Paul Millsap, Kyle Korver, and Thabo Sefolosha.
