So the Memphis Grizzlies are continuing their hunt for a new head coach. We recently saw GM Chris Wallace getting something to eat with currently unemployed Lionel Hollins. Some people put 2 & 2 together and assumed it was an unofficial meeting. Frank Vogel has also been in talks with the Grizz and Patrick Ewing, who has been due a head coach job for some time now, has interviewed for Memphis.
But with the coaching pool as deep as it’s ever been in recent memory, the Memphis Grizzlies are going very left field, they recently gained permission to interview Miami Heat assistant coach David Fizdale. Interesting.
Fizdale has 13 years of assistant coaching experience with the Heat, Atlanta Hawksand Golden State Warriors that includes two NBA championships with Miami. The former University of San Diego guard is involved in player development and assisting Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra in all areas of game preparation. While the Los Angeles native has never been an NBA head coach, he served as head coach of the Heat’s summer league teams in 2010 and 2012.
Not a bad resume at all there. Now I don’t see why not, It’s just an interview after all and if David Fizdale gets it then best of luck to him. But I can’t help but asking “why?” There are so many coaches waiting for a job and you’re going for an assistant? Of all years to go for one. As I said it’s a little left field but again if Fizdale gets it, best of luck to him. Well deserved.
