The Memphis Grizzlies have hired Tayshaun Prince to a front office role, according to Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal. Prince’s role will be as a special assistant to general manager Chris Wallace.
Prince spent 14 seasons in the NBA, playing parts of three seasons with the Grizzlies. The former forward has not played since 2016 after 77 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Prince’s prime was spent with the Detroit Pistons where he won one NBA championship.
In his later years, Prince was known as a veteran voice in locker rooms, bringing a level of communication to players. According to Tillery, the Grizzlies hope that Prince can bring a “unique voice” to the front office.
Former players can often bring a different voice to management. Experience playing against many of the players still in the league can allow Prince to bring valuable intel to the Grizzlies.
Memphis is in a bit of a rebuilding stage, having moved on from Zach Randolph, Vince Carter, and likely Tony Allen. However, with Marc Gasol and Mike Conley still leading the team, the organization is probably continuing to look for ways to win now. Prince will be tested by how he can aid in that process.
