Gregg Popovich, head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, will miss the team’s next two games, vs. the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves due to a medical situation within his family.
From Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express News:
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will miss the team’s next two games because of a family medical situation, team spokesman Tom James announced at the club’s shootaround Monday morning.
Assistant coach Ettore Messina will run the team in Popovich’s absence, James said.
David West spoke on Popovich’s absence, and was optimistic about it:
“It won’t change things,” Spurs forward David West said of Popovich’s absence. “We’ve got a really veteran group, guys who are not going to deviate from what we’ve been doing. We know we’ve got to play defense and move the ball and get the best shot available every offensive possession.
“We are just going to do our business and try to get off to a good start on this road trip.”
It’s just 2 games, and it shouldn’t affect the team too much. The Spurs’ opponents in Popovich’s absence, the Pacers and the Timberwolves, aren’t exactly top-notch competition(although the Pacers can be at times). All in all, this isn’t a big deal at all. Hopefully Pop’s family is okay!
