In game interviews with Gregg Popovich are the most entertaining part of Spurs games. The team is so fundamentally sound that Pop’s “tv antics” are what the viewer is really tuned in for. While he may not be as “Camera friendly” as a Rex Ryan per say, he definitely can put on a show.
On Tuesday, before the Spurs game against the Thunder, Popovich was asked if he is being serious when on TV, or if he’s just trying to entertain the viewer.
“I think it’s an unnecessary activity that we’re doing because it takes us away from our job,” Popovich said. “We talk to the media all the time and when it’s a TV game, the TV is in your huddles, they’re everywhere. We have microphones on us. I don’t see the sense of taking us away from our team when we’re supposed to be doing something defensively or offensively at the end of the quarter. So I think for the period of the game, it’s bad. I don’t think it’s necessary. So, since we still have to do it, I try to have fun with it. I think the people get a kick out of it.”
Oh yes Pop, we do.
Popovich was then asked if he actually gets good questions.
“You know, once in a while. A good question is one that you can answer. When somebody says, ‘You know, you guys couldn’t make a basket, what are you going to do?’ We’re going to make a trade during the timeout. I’m going to ask them not to miss. You’re put in a position when you’re going to say something ignorant, so that’s when I do what I do.”
