Greg Monroe is a big name in free agency this summer. All season, there have been talks of him landing in different places such as New York to play for the Knicks, or Boston to play for the Celtics. Not many people have thought that his current team, the Detroit Pistons, would have a chance to resign him, but not so fast. Recently Monroe said to Terry Foster of the Detroit News that he does not know why people are assuming that he will leave.
“I don’t know why people have the notion or the thought that I am just out of here already, like it is one foot out the door. At the end of the day, I am going to do what any free agent would do. I will listen to everybody and assess it.”
Monroe averaged 15.9 PPG and 10.2 RPG in his fifth season in Detroit. He was drafted to there in 2010 as the seventh overall pick and has played great for the Pistons since he got there, but they have not made the playoffs yet. In fact, this year they won 32 games, and that is the most they have won since he arrived in the Motor City. He won’t rule out leaving though, and he even said that the Pistons have an advantage in free agency.
“I have ties here; I have been here my whole (adult) life. They drafted me, so of course I am going to listen to them with the same ear as I listen to everybody else. They have the upper hand.”
The upper hand that Monroe talks about could just be the extra year and money that the Pistons can offer him due to the Bird rights they own as his current team. Greg Monroe will have a big choice to make when free agency comes around, and as a very good player, it will be very interesting to see where he ends up going.
