As more details emerge about the altercation between teammates Draymond Green and Kevin Durant the worse the situation seems to get. The latest report suggests that Green’s comments not only suggested towards the uncertainty of Durant’s future in Golden State, but even went as far as to push him out the door. Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports says Draymond Green’s comments were even more harmful than originally thought.
Green blurted to Durant something along the lines of, “We don’t need you. We won without you. Leave,” sources said.
By referring to their 2016 championship, Green effectively let Durant know that he felt confident in the team’s ability to succeed whether Durant was with them or not. When addressing a super-star teammate who may be considering leaving next year, this may not be the most persuasive way to convince him to come back. However, it seems that for Draymond Green, that may be exactly what he wants.
In 2016 the Warriors had a historic season winning 73 of their 82 games played. Holding that title of the best regular season of all-time they trounced their way to the playoffs until they met the Cavaliers in the finals. After taking a 3-1 lead against the LeBron-led Cavs, it seemed a second straight championship was a given until history was made once again and the Cavaliers fought their way back to their first franchise title. The Warriors responded by adding Durant and have never looked back from Durant’s boost from historic to virtually unbeatable.
Whether this drama will finally cause the downfall of a truly amazing run has yet to be seen, but this trouble in paradise is the biggest cracks we’ve yet to see in the Warriors’ interpenetrate armor. However, we’ll have to wait until next off-season to see the final results of this most recent drama.
