Gotham Gazette: The Crows Caught Alice, But Did Batman Free Her?

The Bat returned, and with him so did insanity in the form of Alice. The Crows cornered and caught that insanity though; before someone freed her, that is. (The CW)

The Crows Caught Alice, But Did Batman Free Her?

We just really can’t have nice things here in Gotham I guess. Just a week after the Bat returned from a long three-year vacation, (along with an insane new criminal but, what else is new?) things were really starting to look up for this city.

Somehow, the Crows, despite all their authoritarian flaws, actually managed to capture Alice with next to no casualties. Her Wonderland Gang managed to get their hands on an innocent elderly couple hours before she was caught but, 2 deaths is a hell of a lot better than the 200 we’re used to here. Anyway, just as it seemed like the Bat and the Crows would be able to coexist together in harmony, disaster struck. On live TV in front of the entire city, the van carrying Alice was flipped off a bridge into the Gotham River.

And despite the best efforts of some “expert” marksmen over at the GCPD, Alice managed to escape. But, here’s the thing, her gang was nowhere to been seen, the route the van was set to take had been verified and covered by both the Crows and the GCPD. So, who planted those explosives? And who cut through the inch-thick steel on that van, underwater, in one go? Well, I’ve got one guess and you probably won’t like it, Gotham. The Bat. No one else has the means, expertise, or skills required to pull off a rescue like that without leaving a trace of evidence behind.

I know some media figures would rather just wax poetic about how the Bat’s return is just wishful thinking to exonerate him of this. But, there more than a few civilian witnesses who report seeing a large black shadow flying into the river shortly after the crash. Not only that though, but I also have a source (who will remain anonymous) over at the GCPD who was part of the search party on the banks of the river.

This person claims that their dogs caught the scent of someone, it was barking up a storm. They say that they caught a glimpse of something that looked like a person in a black suit laying on the river bank but it vanished before anyone could get a good look. And get this, apparently, this person knew the Bat before he vanished three years ago, but they claim whoever it was looked significantly smaller than the Batman we all know and love.

Not sure what to make of that since they only claim to have caught a glimpse of this mysterious figure. But folks, it looks like we may have an imposter on our hands. Also, just to add another wrinkle, a source over at the Crows has told me that this ‘Alice’ character is really the long lost daughter of one Jacob Kane, the leader of the Crows. Again, not sure what to make of that quite yet but, if it’s true then this fight is much more personal, and complicated, than any of us imagined.

This means we’d all better pray that I’m wrong and the Bat, imposter or not, is on our side. Because things will probably get MUCH worse before they get any better, Gotham.

Batwoman airs Sundays at 8/7c on The CW.
