Although Fox’s Gotham has, since it was first pitched, been a show primarily about Detective Jim Gordon (Ben MacKenzie), the series will also act as an origin story for many well-known DC heroes and villains: Batman (David Mazouz), Catwoman (Camren Bicondova), Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor). Other familiar names like Harvey Bullock (Donald Logue) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) will be joined by newcomer Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) to round out an extensive cast.
However, should Gotham last longer than the first 13 episodes ordered by Fox – which may be likely given the positive early reviews of the pilot – the show may add another villain, one known for kicking some ice.
In an interview with HitFix, the director of the Gotham pilot, Danny Cannon, said he would like to introduce Mr. Freeze to the roster of heroes and villains whose origin stories will be established on the show. At this point, though, only Cannon is on board to add Mr. Freeze to Gotham; Bruno Heller, series creator, and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns have yet to support the iceman.
Cannon said:
I have a big pitch with Bruno about the Mr. Freeze character, whose origins are uncertain. If I can win Geoff Johns over and if I can win Bruno over, then I look forward to the moment where that character can be realized.
The show already has a lengthy list of characters with origin stories to explore and Cannon added that they’re in no rush to show the transformations of the most dangerous villains in Gotham.
Cannon said he and Heller refrained from signing onto the series until both the network and the studio assured them that they would not force the creators to realize their villains too quickly. They’re aiming for Gotham to be a “slow-burn” series rather than revealing the masked villains too early on.
While Mr. Freeze is one of the more recognizable Batman villains – certainly as well known as Riddler and Penguin – Gotham may be experiencing a hiring freeze in terms of new antagonists. The show is already working with the back stories of Selina Kyle, Oswald Cobblepot, Edward Nygma, and Fish Mooney. According to Cannon it will be some time before these characters become the villains known by fans, so there may not be room for Dr. Victor Fries on Gotham at the moment.
