Google has announced that it will extend paid sick leave for its “extended workforce.” This move will provide paid sick leave to full-time employees, as well as contract and temp workers.
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, currently employs approximately 100,000 worldwide, most of whom work in North America. In addition, Google is encouraging employees to work from home if their role allows them to do so.
“We are carefully monitoring the situation and will continue to assess any adjustments needed over the coming months,” Google stated in an email.
“As we’re in a transition period in the U.S.– and to cover any gaps elsewhere in the world–Google is establishing a COVID-19 fund that will enable all our temporary staff and vendors, globally, to take paid sick leave if they have potential symptoms of COVID-19, or can’t come into work because they’re quarantined,” Google told The Wrap.
Google joins Postmates, Apple, Amazon and a dozen other major tech companies looking to help customers and employees affected by COVID-19.
