Former NBA player Glen Rice is reportedly not doing well, financially. According to the Jose Lambiet of the Miami Herald, court records from a paternity suit filed against him, Rice is “almost broke.”
The lawsuit was filed in 2010 but publicized earlier this month. The court originally ordered Rice to surrender $1,500 in child support payments for a daughter he fathered with a Ft. Lauderdale woman. As a result of his pleas last year, however, Rice reduced the required amount to $600.
Rice spent 15 seasons in the NBA. Although primarily known as a star for the Miami Heat, the small forward also played for the Hornets, Lakers, Knicks, Rockets, and Clippers. He was a three-time all star from 1995 to 1998. His son, Glen Rice, Jr. is currently a free agent.
According to the records, Rice’s financial instability came as a result of several bad investments:
“A permanent, material, substantial, unanticipated and involuntary change in circumstances [warranted] a downward modification in support,” the filing reads. “The father (Rice) is in dire financial straits … He has attempted to become gainfully employed in various capacities but has been unable to earn a semblance of meaningful income.”
Rice is apparently making money off of appearances and singing memorabilia, as well as working at basketball camps and coaching wealthy children.
Lambiet estimates that Glen Rice made about $35 million from his NBA career.
