The Top Gun saga continues.
Glen Powell has confirmed he will return for the forthcoming Top Gun: Maverick sequel. However, he’s not sharing much beyond that. During a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused, the actor told host Josh Horowitz that he has a “start date” for production, but declined to offer the exact date or any other details about it.
“I mean, I have a date,” he said with a slight smile.
In 2022, Powell appeared as Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise. Since then, he’s starred in several feature films, including Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney, Devotion with Jonathan Majors and Netflix’s Hit Man. Most recently, he starred in Twisters with Daisy Edgar-Jones.
When Powell takes time off of from saving people from tornadoes in the midwest, it’s unclear who he’ll be working with. Thus far, the franchise’s leading man, Tom Cruise, and Miles Teller are the only name attached to the project. Other Top Gun: Maverick stars like Jay Ellis and Monica Barbaro have not revealed whether they’ll be in the next project. Meanwhile, Manny Jacinto, who appeared as Lieutenant Billy “Fritz” Avalone, has been outspoken about his displeasure with the lack of dialogue his character had in Top Gun: Maverick.
“At the end of the day, Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise,” he told GQ.
“It’s up to us — Asian Americans, people of color — to be that [for ourselves]. We can’t wait for somebody else to do it. If we want bigger stories out there, we have to make them for ourselves.”
However, Avalone didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to the franchise for another chapter.
“Fortunately, it still was a great experience — you get to see this huge machine at work, see how Tom Cruise works, and you get to be a small part of this huge franchise,” he continued.
