Glen “Big Baby” Davis’ may not be a star, but he’s a (very) big body down low, and is a useful role player. At 6’9″, Davis isn’t extremely tall for a power forward, but at 289 pounds, he’s a behemoth of a man. In fact, input his height and weight into a BMI calculator, and it’ll tell you he’s obese. However, BMI calculators are stupid. He’s a professional basketball player, and he’s not Shaq in his later years. He’s clearly in perfectly fine shape.
Besides, big bodies are useful in the NBA. Davis was a key part of the Celtics’ bench during their 2008 championship run. Davis was eventually traded from Boston for Brandon Bass(who is now a Laker), and stayed in Orlando until they bought him out and he was picked up by the Clippers. In 2013-14 Davis played a huge role for the Clips off the bench, averaging 12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and a steal in 30.1 minutes a game. Last season, however, Davis’ minutes dropped dramatically. He played a career-low 12.2 minutes per game, and averaged 4 points and 2.3 rebounds.
Davis is still in contract talks with the Clippers, but if those talks don’t yield a contract, Davis may play overseas.
From Emiliano Carchia of Sportando:
Glen Davis is open to playing overseas if he doesn’t sign a contract in the NBA, a source told Sportando.
Big Baby is in talks to re-sign with the Clippers but if they won’t reach a deal, the center may join the Chinese League or one of the European top divisions.
Many players have taken the path that Davis is considering. They go overseas(usually China) and dominate in an inferior league. Tracy McGrady did it. Sure, Davis could probably go overseas, be the best player on his team, and overwhelm players with his sheer size alone. He might miss the higher level of competition though.
We’ll see what Davis decides to do. Even if he can’t reach an agreement with the Clippers, he could definitely get a gig with another NBA team. After all, he’s been a great big man off the bench for his entire career, and at 29 years old, he’s still in his prime. If he decides to go abroad though, he could likely be a star, albeit in a league with a much lower skill level.
