Former NBA big man Glen Davis enjoyed 8 solid years in the NBA before conditioning and injury issues brought his once promising career to a screeching halt. The man coined ‘Big Baby’ took up tons of space in the lane and used his size to his advantage on both ends of the floor and on the glass.
Davis went both of the previous two campaigns without suiting up for an NBA team after playing a limited role off the bench for the Los Angeles Clippers from 2013-2015. Now at 31 years old, Davis may still have something left in the tank but being away from professional basketball for two years does not play in his favor.
However, that isn’t going to stop Davis from making a serious run at an NBA comeback. “I want to play. That’s my next step,” Davis told ESPN’s Marc Spears. “Whatever I have to do to show I can play the game at a high level still and help a team win, I will do. I know it’s going to be a process because I haven’t played in two years. But I feel like I’m at the prime in my game and I still have a lot to offer.”
Though Davis knows it’s a longshot, the NBA’s developmental G-League could be a good place to start for the 6’9″ big. “I am considering the G League,” Davis said. “It’s a great opportunity to show all 30 teams that I can play without getting hurt. They can see what I can still do. This is the best opportunity to make my steps back to the NBA.”
Now on the wrong side of 30 years, Glen Davis being in his prime is highly doubtful but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the LSU product can contribute in some way to an NBA bench devoid of frontcourt depth. Davis did win a championship with the Boston Celtics during their big-3 era and he was certainly a key contributor on that title team.
Davis has career per-game averages of 8.0 points and 4.4 rebounds on 44.7% shooting from the field.
