Giuliana Rancic has apologized for controversial comments she made on Fashion Police.
The presenter had joked about 18-year-old Zendaya’s dreadlocks at the Oscars on Sunday (February 22), saying that they must have smelled of “patchouli” or “weed”.
In a statement released via YouTube, Rancic said:
“I want to apologize for a comment I made on last night’s Fashion Police about Zendaya’s hair.
“As you know, Fashion Police is a show that pokes fun at celebrities in good spirit. But I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line.
“I just want everyone to know that I didn’t intend to hurt anybody, but I have learned that it is not my intent that matters, it’s the result and the result is that people are offended including Zendaya and that is not ok.
“I am so, so sincerely sorry… this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes; how much damage they can do.”
Following the offensive comments, Zendaya took to Instagram to question Rancic’s “ignorant and outrageously offensive” comments:
Rancic’s Fashion Police co-host Kelly Osbourne also said that she is “seriously questioning staying on the show” following Rancic’s comments.
