Jane the Virgin lead Gina Rodriguez will star in a live-action adaption of Carmen Sandiego for Netflix. Rodriguez is already attached to voice the titular Sandiego in an animated series, to be released on Netflix next year.
Originally an educational computer game in the 90s, Carmen Sandiego was adapted into a popular animated series. The franchise centers on the titular thief traveling around the world on the run from the ACME detection agency.
Rodriguez will also produce the film alongside Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser. Fraser recently worked on the 2016 film A Meeting of the Minds and Misher is best known for producing The Rundown and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Andy Berman, who worked with Misher on It’s Kind of a Funny Story is set to direct.
The fourth season of Rodriguez’s critically acclaimed show, Jane the Virgin, is currently airing on the CW. She can also be seen in theaters with Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Annihilation. However, before the Carmen Sandiego film, Rodriguez is going to star in the Netflix romantic comedy Someone Great.
Not much else is known about the production at this point. Expect the film to drop on the streaming service sometime in 2019.
