An assistant to former NBA star Gilbert Arenas was found guilty of 11 counts of wire fraud on Wednesday. A federal jury gave the following statement of the assistant’s conviction:
On Wednesday a federal jury convicted John A. White, personal assistant to Gilbert Arenas from 2006-12, of stealing more than $2.1 million from the former Wizards star.
According to prosecutors, White stole money during a period from 2008 to 2011, making unauthorized bank transfers from Arenas’ accounts into three accounts of his own.
$2.1 million is a pretty hefty sum of money, although it may be chump change in relation to the money Arenas has accumulated over his career. Regardless, no one wants to lose that much money and this incident is another reason for professional athletes to learn to take care of their finances themselves, as no one can be trusted around that kind of money.
Apparently, White spent the money on a Ferrari, a Land Rover, and mortgage payments on his house. So he didn’t exactly leave a clean trail.
