Charlotte Hornets’ guard Gerald Henderson will opt in for his final season with them. The Hornets recently traded Lance Stephenson to the Clippers for Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes, which means they’re shooting guard position is wide open. Earlier this week, center and Hornets’ star Al Jefferson decided to opt-in to his contract and now Henderson.
According to the Hornets PR:
BREAKING NEWS: @GhJr09 has exercised his player option and will remain with @hornets for the 2015-16 season
— Charlotte Hornets PR (@HornetsPR) June 17, 2015
The Hornets finished the season 33-49 last season, and were dismantled by injuries to key players in Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson, and those 2 really haven’t been able to stay healthy for a season together. The Hornets haven’t made any ground, and hopefully moving Lance Stephenson will allow them to get rid of an unattractive asset like Stephenson. With the 9th overall pick, a mid-level exception, and some cap-space, the Hornets could try to lure smaller market free agents in order to hopefully fight for a spot in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.
