Georgia Democrats have chosen Georgia State Senator Nikema Williams to replace the late Rep. John Lewis on the ballot this November.
Sachin Varghese, the state party’s general counsel, said that the state senator’s “years of service to the Fifth District and commitment to justice make her the best possible candidate for this role, with a very important legacy to uphold.”
Lewis passed away over the weekend at 80-years-old. Lewis had served 17 terms in the 5th Congressional District. He also had an extensive background that dated back to the Civil Rights Movement. During his six decades of service, he helped register voters across the country, spoke at the March On Washington and much more.
“Nobody could possibly fill the shoes of Congressman Lewis,” Williams said.
“It would be the honor of my life to serve as the voice of the 5th Congressional District,” she added.
Williams is heavily favored against Republican author and television personality Angela Stanton-King for the November 3, 2020 election.
