George Karl coached Carmelo Anthony for the better part of 7 seasons in both of their tenures with the Denver Nuggets.
George Karl is the coach for the Sacramento Kings. Carmelo Anthony is the newly shelved forward for the New York Knicks.
For some reason though, coach Karl may believe that he might still be getting paid to analyze basketball for ESPN because he gave his 2 cents on what he thinks the Knicks should do with Carmelo Anthony and the triangle.
Following from ESPN New York.
“I would go get a great point guard and then find some good big guys. I think you have a stud scorer [in Anthony] — get me a brain, get me a quarterback and then fill in the pieces with maybe second-tier big guys,” Karl said in an interview with ESPN New York on Tuesday morning. “The efficiency of big men in this league, there’s only about five or six of them….
“We had the most success when we had Andre [Miller] and/or Chauncey [Billups] — when we had a point guard that kind of orchestrated the rhythm of the offense,” Karl said.
“Carmelo is a very bright basketball IQ guy, so the triangle is going to be different for him. I think it can enhance some of his skills and I think he’s going to have sacrifice some of his commitment to playing the way maybe he’s played in the past,” Karl said.
Carmelo Anthony might not be the most ideal star for the triangle due to the fact that he is a ball-stopper. The offense starts and ends with him. The thing is, if Carmelo Anthony wants to win, he needs to stop playing games and start to share the ball.
The best thing for the Knicks to do, is obvious. George Karl isn’t breaking any news, it’s just interesting to hear competition say it.
Get that solid point guard, which are all over the place in the NBA nowadays, get some shooters and then plant some solid big men on the inside. It’s not that hard.
Well, apparently, it is after looking at all the headaches the Knicks have faced this season.
