The George Floyd Foundation has awarded a $25,000 scholarship to a student at Fayetteville State University. The historically Black university shared the news during a presentation in North Carolina last week.
“This act by the Floyd family is indeed a testimony to their desire to make certain not only that the name lives on, but that his name remains memorialized in a most meaningful way for the generations to come,” Fayetteville State University Chancellor Darrell T. Allison told the Associated Press.
George Floyd Foundation Founder Bridgett Floyd hopes that this gesture will help future generations.
“That’s what it’s all about – generational stamps,” Floyd said.
“We need to put things in place for our kids’ kids. That’s what I’m here to do.”
This gesture comes as the nation commemorates the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death. Demonstrations have been planned in Brooklyn, Minneapolis, Houston and several other cities. Lawmakers in New York, Washington and a number of other states have put forth different police reform bills as well.
