Y: The Last Man is finally hitting the small screen. On Monday, the critically acclaimed graphic novel series from writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Pia Guerra was ordered to series by FX. The network also released the first image from the series, pictured above, to get fans excited. Y: The Last Man is expected to debut some time in 2020.
One of the most beloved and acclaimed comics of all time, Y: The Last Man tells the story of Yorick Brown, who is believed to be the last living man on Earth. The series ran for 60 issues and detailed Yorick’s adventures with Ampersand, his capuchin monkey, as they try to find the truth behind the mysterious disease that wiped out all of the men. Barry Keoghan is set to portray Yorick.
Other members of the impressive cast include Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, Diane Lane, Lashana Lynch, Imogen Poots, and Amber Tamblyn. Aïda Mashaka Croal and Michael Green are on board as showrunners and executive producers. Brian K. Vaughan developed the series for television with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force. All three will also serve as executive producers on the show.
“Brian and Pia’s exploration of a world without men is a favorite for its depth, its humor, its insights, and its monkey,” Croal and Green said in a joint statement on Monday. “Adapted today it offers us a cracked mirror to look at our own very cracked world. We thank them for their trust — we thank FX for their support — and we thank the casting gods for letting us work with this incredible group of actors.”
Y: The Last Man hasn’t had the easiest time making it to the screen. In 2007, New Line Cinema acquired the rights and planned to adapt the story into a feature film with D.J. Caruso at the helm. However, those plans never came to fruition after Caruso dropped out. Then, in early 2012, it was rumored that Jericho‘s Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia would be adapting the series into a film. But that deal also fell through and in 2014 Vaughn announced that the rights were in the process of reverting back to him. Shortly after that, in 2015, FX had Vaughn begin developing his story into a TV series for the network.
No official date has been announced for the premiere of Y: The Last Man, but it’s expected to land sometime in 2020.
