Iowa State mens basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will have open heart surgery next week to replace his aortic valve according to the school. The procedure will take place next Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
“After my initial surgery to replace my aortic root 10 years ago, I knew that this was something that would need to be done at some point,” Hoiberg said. “My valve has severe regurgitation, and the time has come to get it replaced. I am hopeful that this will be my last surgery, and I’m looking forward to getting this behind me.”
Hoiberg retired from the NBA after the 2004-2005 season because of heart issues. The 42-year-old has a 115-56 record in five seasons as the head coach of Iowa State, leading them to them four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles.
Hoiberg’s name has been rumored as a possible replacement to Tom Thibodeau as head coach of the Bulls, should Chicago decide to make a change during the offseason.
