The UMass Minutemen have hired former South Carolina Gamecocks Head Coach Frank Martin to be their next Head Coach. This comes after the program fired former Head Coach Matt McCall, who coached out the remaining portion of the season. Martin was coaching at South Carolina before he too was fired by the program. This is a big-name hire for the UMass program and one that already had a good connection to the university. Martin’s wife has a degree from the university and knows the area well.

Frank Martin led the South Carolina Gamecocks to an overall record 171-147 and an SEC record 79-99 in ten seasons. He has an overall record of 288-201 as a Head Coach with the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Kansas State Wildcats. Most of his success came with the Kansas State program, but Martin did lead the Gamecocks on a magical run to the Final Four in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. How he handles coaching a Mid-Major program will be interesting to watch.
The A-10 has clearly gotten better with the additions of Archie Miller at URI and Frank Martin at UMass.
Now we’ll see who GW and La Salle hire.

The UMass Minutemen are used to good coaches and winning basketball games. That will be the job of Frank Martin when he officially takes over the program heading into next season. The A-10 will be more competitive on the coaching end and should showcase some fun college basketball games next season and beyond. UMass and Martin could be a perfect fit for each other.
