Former Atlanta Hawks player, and all-star Daron “Mookie” Blaylock for killing a women in a car crash. He is sentenced to 15 years with only 3 years in jail being served for vehicular homicide and a charge in the death of mother of five, Monica Murphy. This collision occured on May 31, 2013 in Clayton County.
Daron Blaylock had a great NBA career as well, starting in one All-star game and being listed on the NBA’s All Defensive Team twice, while finishing off his career with the Golden State Warriors in 2002.
His attorney Amanda Palmer said “His plea was for 7 years in prison and eight years on probation but only for 3 years to be spend in actual prison while the rest would be done through 1,500 hours of community service, treatment of alcoholism, and AA meetings, as well as the fact that he can not drive for 15 years.”
She also commented on his alcoholism problem saying “He has admitted he has a problem with alcohol and he is getting treatment for that.”
Although, the toxicology tests showed that Blaylock had no alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, he performed the act of driving with negligence, because doctors had told him not to drive because of seizures that occurred because of his alcoholic problem, and with his previous convictions of DUI, the problem escalated.
During the collision Blaylock also suffered from serious injuries, temporarily putting him on life support after being released shortly after. During the trial Blaylock said that “the accident changed him.” Hopefully, it’s for the best.
