Florida Freedom Fund, a political action committee launched by Governor Ron DeSantis, has reportedly raised $10,000 in an effort to oppose the legislation that would legalize recreational cannabis use. Thus far, the Florida Freedom Fund, launched in May, has received a single donation of $10,000 from former United States Representative Keith Rothfus. Like Rothfus, DeSantis has been steadfast in his opposition to Amendment 3, a bill that could legalize adult-use cannabis, and a recent report from CBS News suggests the governor would veto it if it is passed by voters in November.
“It’s been flying under the radar, but he’s going to veto,” one official told CBS News.
“The marijuana people are furious, and they are scrambling.”
Despite the governor’s opposition to Amendment 3, it has amassed support among voters and donors. Smart & Safe Florida, the organization behind Amendment 3, has reportedly raised $60 million since 2022. Furthermore, a recent FOX poll found that two-thirds of Floridians support Amendment 3.
“It’s promising to see cannabis reform finally becoming a bipartisan issue. And when I say bipartisan, I mean having Democrats and Republicans as voters, and come together and support this,” Suncoast NORML Executive Director Chris Cano said.
“Cannabis is a safe drug and that when it’s properly regulated and patients have saved in quality and affordable access, it works. It increases property values, it helps the economy. And this is going to be a great thing for Florida,”
