Everyone had the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins fighting for NFC East supremacy before the season started. So much malarkey was made of RG3’s return and Jay Gruden’s offensive prowess. Likewise, the Eagles were being touted as the future NFC Champions. Yes, their 3-0 start to the season has been impressive. Yes, they’re the only team in history to be undefeated when coming back from two-digit defecits in every game. Yes Chip Kelly is genius. The Eagles-Redskins matchup on Sunday was epic, but it was merely a lesson in the NFC East curriculum. Kirk Cousins threw for over 400 yards against Philadelphia, and then followed that act by throwing 4 interceptions against New York. What did we learn? Philly has no defense. Defense wins championships. Enter Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.
Tony Romo played what was likely the worst game of his career against San Francisco. What was strange though, the maligned Dallas defense (no longer employing Monte Kiffin’s Cover 2), held San Francisco to 0 second half points. If it weren’t for Romo’s miserable play, Dallas could’ve had that game. I mean for God’s sake, we all thought that without Sean Lee, Dallas’s defense would be complete garbage. There’s even been jokes about the Cowboys defense having the first negative rating on Madden. They’ve been pleasantly surprising though.
Since that Week 1 loss, Dallas has defeated Tennessee and came back from a 21 point defecit to beat St. Louis. Demarco Murray is on pace for a record season (so long as he doesn’t fumble), and their offensive line is the most impressive its been since the good ol days when Emmitt had 6 lane freeway-sized gaps to run through.
As always, time will tell. Currently, Dallas is situated at 2nd in their divison. With a Sunday night matchup against the prolific Saints offense, it’ll be interesting to see how they hold up. Win or lose though, Cowboys fans…there’s always Romovember.
